Besides Android 1.4, the FirstView PC607V also runs Windows CE. It’s just one of the cheap Android tablets there at CeBIT, according to Engadget reporter Joanna Stern. While Joanna never really took the time to have a good look at them cheap Android Tablets, we gather that the FirstView tablet costs only $95 and sports a resistive touchscreen that supports finger-input. Forsa and Huawei were also there with their own cheap Android tablets. Engadget has a hands-on video of the FirstView tablet. For a measly $95, imagine having a WiFi-enabled browsing device in your hands. Not bad at all, especially if it supports a host of video codecs.

Ideum unveils new and improved MT-50 multitouch table

mt50-multitouch-03-03-2010

Ideum’s original MT2 multitouch table was certainly impressive enough for early 2009, but the company already followed it up with an updated MT-50 model in August of last year, and it’s just now taken the wraps off some further, fairly significant improvements to that model. It’s still a DLP projector-based system with a 50-inch screen, but the PC at the heart of the table has been upgraded to a quad-core rig with GeForce GTX 285 graphics and, just as importantly, the number of points-of-touch has been increased to sixty, making it an even more attractive option for places like museums. As before, the table also boasts a nigh indestructible tempered glass surface, which has definitely been put to the test. See for yourself in the video after the break.

eBook readers are certainly getting more and more popular, and as consumers, we’re certainly hoping that the price will drop, which should help increase the adoption rate of eBook readers. Considering most eBook readers cost around $300 or more, Freescale just might be on to something with its i.MX508 processor. This 800MHz ARM-based ship includes USB host functionality, as well as dedicated circuitry for controlling the e-ink panel; basically it’s a system-on-a-chip. The best part is that it’ll be sold for just $10 on volume, and with that can kind pricing, eBook readers could be reduced to something about $150, which is certainly much more affordable than three-hundred clams, wouldn’t you say?

Robot teachers to invade Korean classrooms

This item was filled under [ General ]

robot-teacher-02-22-2010

We’d had some indication that robot teachers could be headed to classrooms sooner or later, but it looks like things may now be progressing faster than anyone thought. According to South Korea’s etnews, the country has announced plans to invest in a so-called “R-Learning” program that promises to put robotic teaching assistants in up to 400 pre-schools by 2012, and expand to a full 8,000 pre-schools and kindergartens the following year. Those apparently wouldn’t be in charge of the class (yet), but they would be used to do things like recite stories, and could let parents check in on the classroom and send messages to their children. If that trial program proves to be successful, the robots could then be expanded to elementary schools, and the Korea Institute of Science & Technology (the folks responsible for the bots) is apparently already eyeing international possibilities.

iPhone OS 4.0 preview set for March 14?

iPhone-OS-4011

Whatever happened to the iPhone OS 4.0 that was supposedly launching alongside the iPad last January? Obviously, it didn’t happen, and like most of you, we’re also thinking that Apple will just debut it on their new iPhone 4G which is expected to be unveiled sometime in January. However, based on an anonymous tip, we might get to see a preview of it next month, on March 14th to be exact. Given that this date falls on a Sunday, everyone’s pretty skeptical about this tidbit. Nonetheless, a March preview isn’t exactly something new for Apple. If you can recall, they also gave us a glimpse of what iPhone OS 3.0 was all about back in March of last year. The date for the iPhone OS 4.0 briefing party maybe questionable, but the March preview is certainly more than plausible. Hopefully, we can get confirmation on this in the next couple of days.
